DIY dog bike basket ideas

February 9, 2016 By Shawna 4 Comments

While there are many high quality commercial dog products, there are pet owners who like to try their hand at DIY.  One such product is the dog bike carrier. Although I have reviewed the best dog bike basket, there is no mention of some of the great DIY ideas I have seen around this product. Below are some very creative and unique DIY dog bicycle basket ideas.

Checklist for DIY dog bike basket

Before showing you what others have done, here is a list of things you need before embarking on your own DIY project.

  • Determining the size of your basket according to how large your dog is
  • Find the right kind of carrier. If you look around,, there are actually plenty of options for you to choose from. From waiver basket to bike trailer, you can creatively use things that are lying in your home
  • See how to fit the basket on your bike. A simple way is to use a luggage truss to act as the holder of the carrier. You can either attach this at the front or the back, depending on your preferene as well as the dimensions of your basket in relation to your bike.
  • DIY dog harness or strap. An important component of a DIY dog bike basket to ensure the safety of your beloved pet. There are a number of ways to do this. One is to use a climbing sling and a hook clip. Another to grab a second hand car safety belt. A third option is to use your existing lease and add additional hook clips to be able to clip on both ends.

#1: Trike dog basket

If you have a Trike, this idea is going to be so easy to pull off. All you need is just to find the right basket size that can fit between the two rear wheels. Then, find some second hand safety strap to tied the dog in and you will be good to go. This set is perfect for those with small dogs.

#2: Plastic container

A plastic container is easy to buy and is big enough to hold dogs that weight 20 to 25 lbs.  However the difficulty is on mounting it to the bicycle. As you can see from the image, this particular bike model has a longish front that allows the container to be mounted.  Most bikes might not have such long front so you need to make sure your bike meets the specification.

#3: Skaterack as bike basket

Dog bike rack

This is a very innovative way of carrying your dogs on a bike. Rather than using a basket, the dog owner uses a skaterack that is attached to the side of the bike. This way, the skaterack can carry even large dogs around. However, there don’t seems to be any safety harness involved so you might want to modify this initial design to include them.

#4: Wooden box as bike basket

A wooden box can be easily created and sourced so it makes an easy thing to be use as dog bike basket.  You can also use luggage truss to support the wooden box at the back and the rest should be simple. I would add a second hand umbrella to act as shelter for the dog. Also, don’t forget the safety harness.

#5: Basket + pillow

Basket pillow

Another simple DIY idea is to use a shopping basket and pad it with a small pillow to make it comfortable for the dog. As you can see from the image above, you can easily attached use some metal hooks and straps to prevent the dog from jumping out of the basket.

Conclusion

Carrying your dog around in a bicycle is fun but you need to a proper equipment like a dog bike basket. If you don’t like to buy it, these few ideas should give you some good reference.

The skaterack? Looks like dog abuse to me! He doesn’t appear to be very comfortable. In fact, he looks very miserable!!

Are you kidding? #3: Skaterack as bike basket? Not only is it extremely unsafe, but just placing a dog on a metal frame like that, could hurt a dog very badly. It’s a good way to DIY yourself into some expensive bills and an injured or dead dog.

Joe and Kristina don’t seem like people who understand what it is to be facetious, which would make them rather dull humans to me.
