It is not a joke when your dog has an upset stomach. I have seen cases where it was so bad that dog vomiting and diarrhea occurs. In really bad cases, I would suggest you take your dog to the vet immediately and forget about home remedies. However, if your dog upset stomach is mild, there are some home remedies you can try. I have some experience with these and these are what I found to be really effective for my dog.
Reasons for dog upset stomach
There are many reasons for a dog to experience an upset stomach. Usually, it is due to its diet. Either there was a change or it might eaten something that it was not suppose to. In these cases, the remedies described here should be able to help.
However, if you see your dog is:
- vomiting or having diarrhea continuously
- has blood in its stool
- is dehydrated and/or
- acting lethargic
then it is better to see a vet immediately. These are symptoms of more serious problems and I don’t think home remedy is going to cut it.
#1: Dog Digestive Enzymes
This has been my number one solution for upset stomachs in my dog. Prior to this, it is always a case of praying that a particular remedy will work. With this Buddy Paw’s digestive enzymes, I find it to be super effective as a treatment for dog vomiting and other forms of dog upset stomach symptoms.
Don’t take my word for it. On Amazon itself, out of 60 reviews, there is 0 reviewers giving it a 1 or 2 star. The lowest was 3 star and that was only one person. If the other 59 reviewers said this product work, there is no reason not to believe them. I have pasted the screenshot below for your convenience.
What makes this product works is that it breaks down the starches in the food into something digestible. It is the starch that causes many of the dog stomach upset problem and it is why this product works.
Another good thing is that my dog did not reject it despite being a fussy eater. Other dog owners on Amazon also shared the same sentiment. Hence, if you worry about your dog not willing to try this medicine, I think your worries will be unfounded as it is basically tasteless and you only need to sprinkle a little bit on to your dog food
For who: This solution is great for dogs who have long term stomach upset problems and are suffering from bad breath, smelly farts and mild cause of vomiting. It is also great for aging dogs who might start to have a weaker digestive system.
#2: Don’t feed your dog for 24 hours
Some upset stomach is caused by overeating. If you noticed your dog has been eating too much food on the previous day then the easy solution is to fast him. For grown dogs, a 24 hour period is ok while a puppy should have a limit of 12 hours. Fasting the dog gives its stomach time to recover from the overeating. However, if your dog continues to have a upset stomach after the fasting, then it is probably not due to overeating.
For who: If your dog has overeaten, this is a free and easy solution.
#3: Serve bland food
If your dog has an upset stomach, it is better to serve him food such as rice, boiled chicken, oat, pumpkin etc that are easier to digest and might even help to overcome the upset stomach. If your dog refuses to eat the bland food, sprinkle some usual dog treats but in moderate amounts to tempt it.
For who: For mild cases of over eating or ingestion.
