How to make a dog proof cat litter box – 4 points to note

August 3, 2015 By Shawna Leave a Comment

I recommended what I though was the best dog proof cat litter box in my latest reviews. However, some readers are actually DIYers who love to take a crack at making their own dog proof cat litter box. In that case, this article will be useful to you as I will highlight some important things to look out for during your making of the box so that dogs can’t abuse it.  I am not writing a “how to DIY your own cat litter box” tutorial as there are already some great tutorials online that you can search for.

#1: The lid must be tight

In making any cat litter box, you want the lid to be as tight as possible because dog can easily remove any lose lids with their bite. Once the lid is gone, you have no defense against the dogs eating and spilling the cat litter all over the place. To ensure that the lid is tight, look for boxes with clamp on lid. This makes it much tougher for dogs to remove them.

#2: Heavy

The thing about dogs is that they can paw at the cat litter box until it topples over to reveal the contents inside. To prevent this, it is prefer that your cat litter box be as heavy. Alternatively, it is must to hook the box to something else so that it is impossible for any dog to push it over.  Many of the current cat litter box, be it commercial or homemade are too light to prevent it from falling over.

My advice is to used a second hand furniture so that you can create a hidden cat litter box enclosure. The furniture can an ottoman or a shoe bench etc. Just create an opening at the top for the cats to jump in and it should be good to ok. The furniture are typically heavy enough to avoid being toppled. It can also help to hide the cat litter box and improves your home decor.

#3: Small opening

Make sure that the opening for the cat is not big enough for your dog to do anything silly, like putting its whole head into the cat litter box, LOL!  If your cat is really fat and needs a big hole, then it is a good practice to place the opening towards the walls so that the dogs can’t get their feet through the hole.

#4: Location

The best way to dog proof the cat litter box is actually to place it in areas where the dogs can’t reach. It can be in a cupboard or cat’s room etc. Whenever the place is, you need to take the correct measurements so that the cat litter box can fit well into these places. Don’t make the mistake of trying to find a good place for cat litter box AFTER it has been done. You should already decided where to place the box before doing anything else.

I hope these 4 points will help you to build a better dog proof cat litter box.
