Keeping a puppy inside the home with you is a great way to bond with it and really ensure that you never miss a moment of its cute little shenanigans. However, having an inside dog is not without its problems – primarily in the form of pet hair all over everything. And if your home is anything like mine, then no matter how hard to try to keep the home clean with indoor pets, you still end up with dog hair on the furniture and floors.
My 6-yeard-old collie, Zoey, sheds a lot of fur in the house that I am constantly trying to clean up. In fact, I often just call her “Fuzzy” since she leaves so much hair all over the place. After driving myself almost insane trying to keep the house clean, I decided to finally try out a specially designed pet vacuum to remove all the dog hair from Zoey in one sweep. I’ve tried out more than one and want to share my find with you below on the best of the best – top rated vacuum cleaners for pet hair removal based on my results.
If you don’t have time to read all the details below,Click Here for the most popular pet vacs as rated by other pet owners.
Since I have a small vacation condo, I tried out several different vacuum cleaners for pet hair removal so that I could get one for each place where I take my pup. I also wanted to find out if I had to stick with one of the larger upright pet hair vacuums or if I could go with a smaller, more compact pet vacuum.
Shopping For The Best Home Pet Vacuum
When you are ready to buy a new vacuum to pick up the pet hair from your dog, then you should not just go with any regular vacuum that you come across. Normal vacuums are not designed to pick up pet hair, and as a result, they do not do a very good job of it. Instead, you need to focus on vacuums that are designed to pick up pet hair on a regular basis. Not only that these vacs actually pick it all up the first time around, but they will not wear down as a result of the massive quantities of dog hair in your home.
Another thing to keep in mind when shopping is if you want to go with a model that includes a HEPA air filter. These models are great for cleaning the pet dander out of the air, which is vital if their are any family members who are allergic to pet dander or who have respiratory problems, such as asthma. Plus, it is just plain healthier for your family if you have clean indoor air.
Best Vacuum Cleaners For Pet Hair Removal in 2014
Since I just got myself a couple of new pet vacs, my reviews of the products listed below are current as of 2014. Some of the best models that I found were new while others were released several years ago. These are the best vacs that I found to keep my home free of the excessive shedding that my Collie does, so know that these all work great for long hair dogs as well as short hair dogs. I hope my reviews help you find a great option to pick up all that dog hair in your home too!
Best Upright Bagless Vacuum For Dog Pet Hair
For me, I find that a traditional upright vacuum is the best whole house option. These types of vacs are generally a bit heavier than other models, but they are powerhouses and usually do great on both carpeted and hard floors. And, they often come with an assortment of different attachments, which makes it easy to get to all the dog hair in the corners and on the carpeted stairs. My top pick for this model is:
Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Pet Rewind Plus Upright Vacuum, Bagless, UH70210
This Hoover vac has it all – designed to pick up pet hair, easy to store in even the smallest of apartments, HEPA and carbon filters for your health, lots of on-board tools including one for getting pet hair on carpeted stairs, and a super low price under $150 (when you buy online)
I also love that this one is bagless, which means that I don’t have to spend money on costly vacuum bags. This is especially important to me since my dog sheds a lot, which means that the canister gets filled up regularly.
The special pet hair tool that comes with this Hoover WindTunel is also perfect for getting pet hair off the sofa before company arrives. And, you know what they say about the sucking power of a Hoover – nothing gets left behind when you use this baby!
If you have a dog that has an excessive shedding problem, this this is a GREAT choice for you. I’ve had vacuums in the past where the pet hair clogs the brush rollers and wears down the machine, but that never happens with this Hoover WindTunnel model.
Another thing that I like about this vacuum is that it is surprisingly lightweight. It comes in at just over 16 pounds, which is great if you have stairs in your home like me.
Best features: Very powerful, lightweight, included HEPA filter and very cheap.
Best Handheld Vacuum For Dog Hair In Car
If you’re like me, then you take your dog out with you in your car on a fairly regular basis. And while I love taking my pup out with me, what I do not love is all the dog hair that is left on my seats after the trip. I’ve tried using those car vacuums at the car wash to remove it, but that never seems to get it all up. I always just assumed that this was because I have a long-haired dog who sheds a lot, but after trying out a handheld pet vacuum, I’ve learned that you can get all the pet hair out of your car! The best car vacuum for pet hair that I’ve found is:
Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum, Corded, 33A1
This little handheld Bissell is PERFECT for keeping the car clean of dog hair. It also has a really long cord, which makes it easy to plug it at the porch and then reach all the way out to the car. It even has one of those HEPA filters, which makes it a great value pet vacuum for the money.
I love that this little pet vac is super cheap (under $30 when you buy online) and really gets the job done quickly. I’ve even used it in the house when I didn’t want to vacuum the whole house but just get the pet hair off the carpeted stairs or the sofa without pulling the Hoover WindTunnel out of the closet.
And, if you’re worried about the weight, then don’t be – it is super lightweight at under 5 pounds. So, if you have a larger SUV like me, your arms won’t get tired cleaning the dog hair off all the seats!
Best features: super cheap, lightweight, really picks up all the pet hair, ultra portable.
Best Hard Floor Vacuum For Dog Pet Hair
If you do not live in a home with carpeted floors, then there is no real need to buy one of the more expensive upright pet vacuums like the Hoover WindTunnel mentioned above.
While I do have carpet in my home, I also have a fair amount of tile, linoleum and hardwood floors. That being said, I wanted to get a pet vacuum just for those floors since one of them is my kitchen. After trying out a few models, my top pick for hard floor pet vacuum is:
BISSELL PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum, 81L2T
I love how cheap this hard floor pet vac is, with a price under $50 when you buy online. Plus, it is from a brand that I trust.
As you might expect this Bissell pet vac is super lightweight at just over 7 pounds.
Once thing you’ll notice right away is that the design of this vacuum is a bit odd. Instead of the standard front, this model has a V-shaped design. While it might look weird, it is actually highly effective at getting pet hair out of those hard to reach areas of the room. It really eliminates the need for any of those on-board tools and nozzles that other vacuums offer.
Plus, there’s no brushes on the bottom of it, which means you don’t have to worry about it scratching up those beautiful hardwood floors.
Best features: cheap, perfect for hard floors, gets hard-to-reach areas, lightweight and easy to store.
Best Canister Vacuum for Dog Pet Hair
If you are low on space, or just have this design preference, then a canister vacuum is a good choice for cleaning up all that dog hair. Personally, I was not really a fan of this type of design, but my mother swears by it and that is the only reason that I tested out a canister pet vacuum.
Honestly, I did not find a lot of options available for sale when it comes to canister vacuums for dog hair. However, I did manage to give more than one model a test run. After seeing how they handled the shedding of my Collie pup, my top pick for the best canister vacuum for pet hair is:
Eureka Mighty Mite Pet Lover,3684F
As you can tell from the image, this is a very simple, minimalist pet vacuum that does not take up much space at all. In fact, I think that it is a great choice for pet owners who live in small apartments or condos, such as a studio apartment.
While this little Eureka pet vac might not look like much, it definitely offers a lot of value for the money. It is very versatile and can work on both carpeted floors and hard floors. Plus, the tools allows you to easily clean dog hair off the furniture.
It has a HEPA filter, is super lightweight, and even has some on-board cleaning tools. The only real negative about this pet vac is that it is NOT bagless. That’s right, you will have to buy and replace bags in this one, which is standard for any canister vacuum. Fortunately, the bags are very cheap – you can get them for about a dollar a piece if you buy them online.
Best features: lightweight and easy to store, HEPA filter, good for both hard floors and carpeted floors.
Best Hands-free Roomba Vacuum for Dog Pet Hair
If you are looking for a way to keep the dog hair off the floor without having to actually drag out the vacuum cleaner on a regular basis, then consider going hands-free with the iRobot Roomba vacuum for pet hair.
I’m sure that you’ve seen a Roomba commercial before, or at least a YouTube video of a cat or dog riding on one as it cleans up the floor in the home. So, you likely already know that these are kind of set-it and forget-it types of vacuums. You do not have to walk around pushing a vacuum to get the floors clean. Instead, you just set it on the floor and let it do its cleaning thing.
If you look online, then you will notice that there are several different Roomba models available for sale, but not all of them are good for picking up dog hair. I test out a few of them and found one to be a LOT better than the rest at picking up at hair in the home. The best Roomba pet vacuum is:
iRobot Roomba 760 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies
I know what you’re thinking – does the Roomba really work for pet hair? Yes! It does! I know it sounds crazy, and I didn’t believe it at first either, but a trusted friend swears by hers, which is why I had to try it for myself. Her model is an older one that lacks some of the newer features, but it still works for her.
As a busy professional, I love how hands-off the Roomba 760 pet vac is when it comes to keeping the house clean. Cause really, who wants to get out the upright vacuum every day after work? Not me!
I also love that it has not one but TWO of the HEPA air filters to keep your indoor air super healthy. That makes this the best choice for families with allergies or respiratory problems.
Unfortunately, this will not completely eliminate your need to vacuum once in a while with a traditional vac, but it comes pretty darn close to it. I find that it works the best on hard floors, but does surprisingly well on carpeted floors with the dog hair from my Collie pup.
Of course, the big negative about the Roomba 760 for dog hair is that it is not cheap. While buying online saves you some money with the discounted price, it is still over $400 for this little robotic pet vacuum.
Best features: dual HEPA filters, works on carpet and hard floors, hands-free operation.
Out of all the pet vacuums that I tested out in my home, these models were the ones that I found to be the best. There are certainly other models available for purchase – from more expensive models with more features to cheaper pet vacuums that work okay for the money but are not as great as these.
